Budget Swapping and Shopping at ClosetDash
Attention New York City budget fashionistas, there's a new affordable way to shop. ClosetDash, founded by Jennifer Lee, started as a well-organized clothing swap party formerly known as ClosetRaid hosted several times a year in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Now, it's also a tiny boutique near Union Square called ClosetDash Shop where you can bring in your new and gently-used clothing, shoes and accessories and swap them for items of a similar value (a clever, color-coded system keeps the process running smoothly). And if you don't have anything to swap, you can simply come in to shop. The merchandise is name-brand and the prices are reasonable. During a recent visit, we scooped up a brand new top and a pair of trouser pants -- both from LOFT.
ClosetDash Shop is located at 30 East 20th, Suite 402.
Hours are Friday - Saturday 11-7 and Sunday 11-5.

Clothing Swap Profile on WCBS: Check Me Out on the News!
Click Here: I'm interviewed in a clothing swap profile on WCBS. Check me out!

I consider myself a clothing swap queen and budget shopping expert. Besides the recent interview on WCBS, I've written about clothing swaps for the New York Daily News and have been interviewed by New York Magazine , and by a Columbia U student for an article on the Really Really Free Market at St. Mark's Church.
Speaking of swaps, here's what's coming up:
Friday, Nov 14 starting at 6:30
The Greenpoint Church of the Messiah
129 Russell Street between Nassau and Driggs
5 bucks admission donated to the church
Take the G to Nassau and walk 7 blocks to Nassau and turn
right, the church is located in the middle of the block across the street from
McGorlick Park.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle at the Flatbush FreeMeet!
sponsored by Sustainable Flatbush and Freecycle™ New York City
Saturday, November 22, 2008, 12pm - 3pm

Directions: Q train to Newkirk Ave or F to 18th Ave. By bus, take the

WHY: New Yorkers discard some 12,000 tons of waste each day
that is exported to landfills and incinerators in other states!
Here's your chance to help NYC reduce waste and keep our environment
clean by finding new homes for your old stuff, and getting some
things you can use in the process. Leftovers will be donated or
recycled to every extent possible.
WHAT TO BRING: Bring unwanted clothing, housewares and
other reusable items to share* or simply bring a tote bag to fill.
Bring friends and family too!
MORE INFO: www.RecycleThisNYC.org/freemeet
(excuse our technical difficulties--the date and location on the
website will be fixed today)
*please bring portable items only and log on to
www.Freecycle.org to give away furniture and other heavy
stuff.

The Fearless Clothing Swapper
Check me out in New York Magazine: Tracy at Swap-O-Rama! The writer approached me because I had so many darn bags. I know before I venture to a swap that I'm gonna leave with more than I came with, but I really outdid myself at the Swap-O-Rama in April. Since then, I've been to countless swaps, including the recent, hot-and-sticky Thrift On! on the Botanica Bar in the East Village.
And swaps aren't the only place to find cool clothes for free. Take a look at the above photos to see a couple great garments I found on the street. Wow, I really am a bag lady, huh?
I found the long, vintage plaid skirt after an abandoned stoop sale in downtown Brooklyn. It had the $40 price tag from Ollie's -- a vintage store in Carroll Gardens -- still attached. And the unique, checker and flower print dress...well... I grabbed that sucker from under a fence in Clinton Hill. No, I'm not kidding. I'm serious about my freebies and that fence wasn't going to come between me and a cool dress. Remember, only suckers pay retail!
